K9 Sniffs.
If your traffic stop involved a drug dog, your rights may have been violated. At Sonnenklar Law, we know how to challenge unlawful K-9 searches—because we’ve done it successfully time and time again.
Florida law places strict limits on how and when police can use a drug-sniffing dog during a stop. If officers delayed you without cause, manipulated the stop to allow time for a K-9 unit to arrive, or used a dog without probable cause, we may be able to suppress the evidence and get your case dismissed.
We’ve successfully defended clients in cases where drugs, firearms, or cash were discovered after questionable K-9 deployments. We understand the nuances of search and seizure law and aggressively fight to protect your constitutional rights.
Don’t assume your case is hopeless just because a dog was involved. Let us review the stop, analyze the bodycam footage, and hold law enforcement accountable.
Tag Lights.
Under Florida Statute 316.221, your license plate must be illuminated with a white light and clearly visible from 50 feet when your headlights are on. If that light goes out—even unknowingly—it can give police a reason to stop your vehicle.
But not every tag light stop is legal. At Sonnenklar Law, we examine every detail: Was the light truly out? Was the stop justified, or just a pretext to search your car? We’ve successfully suppressed evidence in cases where the underlying traffic stop didn’t hold up under scrutiny.
Tag light and taillight stops are among the most common ways officers initiate drug dog deployments and searches. If your case started with a broken bulb, don’t assume the police were in the right. These are exactly the kinds of cases we fight—and win.
License Plate Covers.
Florida law requires your license plate to be securely mounted, unobstructed, and clearly visible from at least 100 feet. Under Florida Statute 316.605, even minor issues—like a dealership plate cover or a slightly off-center mount—can give police a reason to pull you over.
We’ve seen it many times: A routine plate violation becomes the basis for a drug dog search, a vehicle search, or even a criminal charge. At Sonnenklar Law, we know how to challenge these pretextual stops. We analyze patrol videos, bodycam footage, and the officer’s report to determine whether the stop was truly legal—or just a fishing expedition.
Some common plate accessories from companies like Carvana and rental services may technically violate the statute. But that doesn’t mean the evidence that follows is always admissible.
If your case began with a license plate stop, we can help. We’ve successfully suppressed evidence and dismissed charges in cases just like yours.
